Our own design, and the crank we put on 80 percent of the Rivendells that go out of here as complete bikes. The SILVER crank is smart and exceptionally nice looking, and has the design features we sought but couldn't quite find in any other. And it passes the most rigorous testing.

It comes in two versions--a 44/34/24 triple, for all-around wide-range gearing for varied terrain; and a 38/24 double (this one has a chainring guard), ideal for riding with long pants, in town, and yet it still works off-road because of the 24t inner.

Crank lengths: 170mm, 173mm, 178mm.

From 170 to 184 is only about 1/2-inch, and from 170 to 173 is, my god, only 3 mm—less than half the diameter of a standard pencil. Check out the crank length on your current bike, and if you like them, get the same length, or the closest equivalent.

BEST MATERIALS. There are two common aluminum alloys used in cranks. The strongest and best is 7075 T6 aluminum. That's what the SILVER is made of.

BEST MANUFACTURING METHOD. The SILVER crank is cold-forged. It's more expensive, but imparts a grain to the metal in a way that casting and machining doesn't. But nobody really casts cranks anymore (they used to). And some really fine cranks are machined. But they're machined because forging costs too much for small operations.

It’s compatible with JIS taper bottom brackets, which are most of them, and the chainline is about 47 with a 110mm Shimano BB, and 50mm with a 113. The Q-Factor with a 107mm BB is 154mm.

On road bikes with straight (normal) chain stays, mount it on a 107-110mm square taper BB (JIS). If your bike has bowed-out chain stays like most mountain bikes, it might need a 113mm.

The chainrings are compatible with 10 speed and lower.

Check out our gear inch calculator if you want to fine tune your gearing.
