Sackville ShopSack (updated for late 2025!)
In the 1990s nobody put Wald baskets on good bikes except us. We carried groceries in them, sometimes in the paper bags or plastic sacks or day packs. Do that enough and you figure out that a simple closable tote is better. The handles help. Size them to fit like a glove into Wald baskets, Bob's your uncle. Ten years ago we added a small pocket on the inside, and early October of 2025 we made the handles adjustable, so you can carry it without dragging, or sling it over your shoulder like a beauty queen's sash or a gunman's bandolier. We've also removed the reflective tape on the front of the bag--so you don't think, "It's night, I don't need lights--I've got my ShopSack!"
For touring, shopping (even with a car!), or commuting—if you have a bike with a rack and basket, a Sackville ShopSack will make it all easier and more secure and weatherproof. In a hard rain, we turn ours upside down.
ShopSacks are wider than the are tall, so they're easy to pack and unpack. The fabric is the best dry-waxed cotton we can find in the world. The handles are the best U.S.-made military spec nylon that will never crap out on you and resists twisting; a #5 Coil zipper closes it, and there's a zippered pocket inside for whatever makes sense.
While many latecomers to the basket bag game have festooned theirs with extra features that jack up the price and turn simple bags into puzzles, we've kept ours Sackville-simple.
Two sizes. The medium ShopSack fits the medium Wald basket, and the large Shopsack fits the big Wald basket. If you have another basket, it may not fit it. Since the bags smoosh and crumple when you need them to, a big one fits in the medium basket, no problem, and the small SSack fits in a big Wald. We recommend a basket net, regardless. It's not necessary, but it seems like a good idea over bumps, and even on a smooth road, it keep grabbable things like food, water bottles, hats, and maps handy for on-the-bike snatches.
Roughtly 99% of the staff use ShopSacks for commuting daily; Grant, Roman, James, Sergio, and Will all use one as a camping bag; Will and Sergio use one as an airplane bag.
