Read this first: These preassembled bikes require a mechanic for the final assembly. If you're taking it to a bike shop, or you're confident you can do it yourself (the checklist is linked below), pick the "I'll arrange the final assembly" option on the dropdown menu above and we'll ship your bike pronto. If you want us to go over the bike and get it all ready to go, pick one of the other two options. Note though, that we'll ship the DIY bikes first, so if you need it quickly, go that route.

A frame built into a complete here by Riv mechanics is at minimum $3,136 without a saddle or pedals, so you're still saving a ton of dough getting one of these complete bikes and having us do the final assembly.

------
CLEM Smith Jr. is Rivendell’s fat-tire, easy to fender & rack, joyously upright and stable, more affordable than the rest of our lineup bicycle frame. With appropriate wheels, it's either perfect for commuting and just normal riding, or it's as good a mountain bike as you can get for any price. This one comes with fat knobbies that aren't ultra knobby, and for trail riding there's not a reason in the world to switch them.

CLEMS cost less than our fully lugged models only because they come as complete bikes straight from Taiwan and the two head tube joints are tig-welded instead of lugged. Tigging cuts the construction time for each frame down by a lot so the price gets lower. They'd cost even less if we ditched the head tube ring, seat lug, and fork crown, but we can't limbo that low  :).  Clems are gorgeous bikes, with plenty of beautiful details you won't find on any other tig-welded bikes at any price, including:

• a gorgeous investment-cast fork crown, our own design
• investment-case "napkin-ring" head tube reinforcement rings, with cream-painted RBW and ovals
• an investment cast seat lug with the smartest, strongest binder bolt ears on any seat lug. It uses a standard hardware store bolt (M6 x 22) and a 10mm hex nut. In a pinch, you can clamp it with a vise grip, or use almost any combination of bolt, washers, and nuts to close it. If you or the airlines manage to lose yours, every hardware store in THE WORLD will have either a perfect replacement or a workable solution.

These are made by the same people who make the more expensive frames and with the same materials even, so they ride as well as our custom frames.

PBH ranges:
45cm - 68 to 81cm. Typical rider height: 5-0 to 5-5
50cm - 72 to 86cm. Typical rider height: 5-5 to 5-10
55.5cm - 77.5 to 89cm. Typical rider height: 5-8 to 6-0
59cm - 86 to 96cm. Typical rider height: 5-10 to 6-3

Pick the frame size that your PBH falls most in the middle of the range. Since there's no standover issues, you can go bigger if you want:

A lot of our customers and some staff have found that oversizing the Clems makes for a more luxurious ride. If you want to try that, use the following formula to figure out if you can achieve your saddle height on a bigger frame:

MINIMUM SADDLE HEIGHT per FRAME SIZE = Seat tube length + 13cm.

Measured from center of crank to top of saddle. It's simple, it works like this: Measure your PBH (pubic bone height) and subtract 11cm. That's a good saddle height for you. Subtract 13cm, and that's your maximum Clem frame size. It assumes a saddle without springs, a fairly normal saddle. Example: If your PBH is 85cm, your saddle height is probably 74cm, and 74-minus-13 is 61, so you could easily ride a 61. But since we dont make that size. You can ride a 59cm. OR even, easily, a 55.5cm. In general it feels great to ride the biggest frame you can fit, but CLEMs have plenty of handlebar-height adjustability, so a 55.5cm will feel great, too.

Relevant specs:

Wheel Sizes: 650b for the 45 and 50cm, and 700c for the 55.5 and 59cm.

Seatpost Dimensions — 27.2mm for all sizes

Rear spacing - 135mm and QR wheels only.

Front derailer clamp size - 31.8mm.

Max tire size - 2.4 inches for all sizes. You maybe be able to squeeze in bigger than that, but we're sticking with 2.4. That allows for a little wobble in the wheel (although you'd have to bash it into something pretty hard for that to happen) without tire-rub on the frame.

Complete Bike Build:

  • FSA Duron Headset
  • Shimano 118mm Cartridge BB
  • Rivendell Silver1 36/26 crank, 170mm length for all sizes
  • Shimano Alivio V-Brakes
  • Tektro RS360 Levers
  • Our Silver hubs laced to Alex DM24 rims - handbuilt by St. Jump. Super nice wheels.
  • Kenda Booster knobbies, 54mm wide
  • Silver2 thumby on the right, SunRace on the left. We had tons of SunRacer shifters left over from a past order, and they're great, and we used them here.
  • SILVER OM-1 rear derailer - the best-looking & working rear derailer made.
  • Skeleton Key front derailer. Ugly, but works great.11-36 cassette
  • Nitto Faceplate stems. The 45cm and 50cm sizes have 85mm 90-190 stems. The 55.5cm bikes have 110mm 90-190s. The 59cm bikes have a special 31.8 clamp 72-190 stem.
  • TOSCO Bars. Kind of like the BOSCO. A good pick. 55cm wide for the 45 and 50cm bikes, 60cm wide for the 55.5cm, and 65cm wide for the 59cm.
  • SEAT POST: NITTO S65 — 27.2mmComfy, basic plastic saddle also included

Pedals and grips aren't included. We recommend the MKS Monarchs, and the Newbaums Wool Felt and Cloth tape.

Is there room for customization?

Yes, there is. Have us do the final assembly (using the options in the dropdown menu above) and call us to go over what you'd like done. There may be an extra labor charge if what you want is a lot of work, but the assembly charge will cover the easy stuff. Our number is 800-345-3918.
