MUSA Mitts

By popular request, we added thumbs to the old halfmitts.

When all you need is a little fur and total wind blockage, mitts are the answer. They’re made of "Windpro" windproof fabric (waterproof too by our tests), too, but that’s just incidental to their greatness.

They're made of some kind of super expensive, fleecy windproof synthetic, and there’s nothing more to them than the photos suggest. Now with thumbs!

Your thumbs don't need coverage unless it's super cold.  They hide behind the bar sometimes, and---being fat and squat and all, it is well adapted to coldness. People complain about cold finders all the time, but cold thumbs, never. Thumbs, are squat, a shape well-adapted to conserving heat. Plus, they're often tucked behind the handlebar, mostly out of the wind.

Besides, you can wear these over gloves or fingerless gloves, or even wool mittens. Layer away with the mitts! Lefts and rights are the same. An elastic wrist strap holds them on. Fingers getting hot? Slide out and let the mitts dangle. Want them outa here? They pack away to nothing. One size fits all. Loose on small ladies and children, but no harm in that.

Simple as a bone, totally effective, they’ll work on any handlebar. Made in San Francisco and $20 for a pair.

Fuzzy green "monkeywool" fleece inside. It's not real wool.

Essential Handwear February 5, 2013
Reviewer: Smitty from Milwaukie, OR United States
This is the 2nd year with my MUSA Halfmitts. I wear them regularly 9-months out of the year and every once-in-a-while the other 3 months. Sometimes over gloves. Sometimes by themselves. Easy to flip off to use my fingers. They stay attached via the elastic wrist strap. How these aren't a common item in every bike and outdoor type store is beyond me.

Great, low-cost addition to cold weather clothing. December 29, 2012
Reviewer: Chris from Tuckerton, NJ
I bought these Halfmitts because this past Spring I cut my index finger pretty badly with a circular saw. As the weather has become colder, my hands would be warm with the gloves I have used in the past, but due to diminished blood flow that finger stayed very, very cold. I got to use the Halfmitts today in sub-35 degree weather, and they work great! With thin wool glove liners my hands were very warm the whole time, including my bum finger.
I can also attest to their waterproofness, as it started to rain for the last couple miles of my ride, and my fingers stayed dry.
The Halfmitts are super light and take up barely any space, so they're great for leaving in my handlebar bag, for those days when I underestimate what gloves I need.
The bright red color is also really nice for signalling in traffic.
At $14, the value-to-function ratio is up there among the things Rivendell sells, in my opinion at least. And made in USA, on top of it all!

Great November 20, 2012

These Halfmitts work great for me with knit wool gloves and temperatures down to about 30 or so.  Much below that and I need heavier gloves.  They probably make the gloves good for about 10 degrees cooler than gloves alone.

I just might sew on a bit of reflective tape to the back of each.  Cool weather also means more likely riding in the dark.
