Sou'westers were designed about 200 years ago by fishermen, and this current design is identical.

The Big Diff is the Fabric. It's basically a yellow slicker hat, but the molecular-chemical compound is Grundens's own, and they've been popping them out this way for 40 or 50 years now, no need to change.

The long tail sheds water so it doesn't run down your neck. The gutter front directs it away from your face. The overall shape is aerodynamic so the wind doesn't catch it, and just in case it does, ear flaps connected by a chin strap keep it on your head. Not good for time-trialling, however.

Although Grundens is a Swedish company, these are made in Portugal, and have been for 30 years, after the Swedish factory burned down. Plus, a big portion of Grundens's market is Portugese fishermen. They, and not Leif Erikson and definitely not Columbus or even Amerigo Vespucci discovered the continent we live on, in the early1400's on their cod-fishing journeys. Cod were big money back then, and they didn't want to spill the beans on their fishing grounds, so they clammed up and never got credit. Anyway, this is the hat they'd have worn back then if they had the chance.

Sold almost exclusively in marine shops, where customers are serious, tend to be rich, and therefore aren't always looking for the cheapest imaginable price. Plus, the bigger pulleys turn more freely. There is no reason on godsgoodearth that all derailers shouldn't have big pulleys, and maybe someday they will. But for now it's the ALTUS, a super-shifting Shimano.

This is my/Grant's personal favorite rear derailer, but that doesn't mean it should be yours. I like it because the pulleys are huge (13t for the top one, 15t for the bottom one, compared to 11/11 on a normal rear derailer). This means they take up more chainslack and don't need as long a cage. The bigger pulleys turn easier, too. I don't care about that, but I find it interesting that Campagnolo retrofits giant pulleys on its derailers for pro riders sometimes, to reduce turning friction.

The thing I really like is that Shimano introduced this big-pulley design near the low-end of its range, probably because they felt it was too risky to introduce on their elite models, figuring the low-brows wouldn't be as tradition-bound. So there it is: Shimano's best design in a cheap derailer. There are now becoming some other Altus variants. Grip is about four inches above the grip—almost twice as high as the Albatross grip. If you find the Albatross grip plenty high enough, don’t give the Bosco Bar points for being even higher.
It comes back a lot. Way back. So far back that it’s probably too much retreat for a normal road bike, but could be ideal for a mountain bike.
It’s straight on each side of the stem, so you get a good, natural time-trial position (also good for fast riding anywhere).

Here’s its best use:
- Longish top tube bikes and upright riding. Mountain bike conversions to supa-comfee cruisers.
- Making too-small bikes fit and feel better. Know somebody who (like my wife used to) still “holds” the handlebar with their fingertips? The Bosco Bar will fix that instantly.
- If you have one of those iBert child seats and you find yourself awkwardly reaching about the child, this bar will fix that, too.
.
Here are some set-up tips:

Start with the grip part angled slightly down. Hey, about seven degrees or so. Don’t measure it. Try that, and raise or lower to suit.
If you like the height and straight part but don’t like or need or want the grand amount of retreat, then cut off some. If you want to cut off some bar and use bar-end shifters, get the cromo 55cm, that one has a constant bar-end compatible diameter. Keep enough room for a grip, brake lever, shifter, bell—whatever you want to fit onto the straight part.
Consider shortening the grip to hand-size, then shifting the brake lever back to butt against the grip. This lengthens the upper grip area in front of the brake lever (or shifter, too, if you have that there). Even with a non-shortened grip, you have a really good second hand position. But a shortened grip makes it true “full hand”, and you may like that.

If you have cork grips, you have at least two shortening options:

Knife way: Slide grips onto handlebar. Grab with hand, mark where to cut, and cut with a sharp knife. You won’t do a perfect job, but it’ll be good enough. Mark the cut-off area with tape first? As you wish.

Grinding wheel way: Yep, grind away the cork on a wheel.

The Bosco Bar is a wonderful bar. It makes even the most uncomfortable bikes comfortable---really. It’s transforming. It’s not magic, it’s not the material, it’s not design genius, it’s just the higher, close grip. It’s the most multi-position handlebar we’ve used. The 58cm has 39 inches of USABLE & EXCELLENT hand space. Every grip is natural (err…gonomic).

It's bar-end shifter compatible, too.

Here’s how you decide which variant, if any:

If you're a smaller person, go for the 52. It’s wide enough and fits between parked cars and traffic with 3cm more clearance than the 58cm.

If you're broader in the shoulders, or a trails rider, get the 58. The extra width is something you might not notice if all we had was the 52, but since we have the 58, go for it—-if you’re a trails-riding, open road-ridin’ person.

Get the 58 if you are tempted to ask the weight difference.

Context: Each of these passes EN Mtn handlebar tests, which are the strictest, most ridiculous handlebar tests out there. Some carbon bars do, too, but a metal bar maintains way more of its strength as it ages, and certainly suffers wear and cuts better. You can get roughly the same shape handlebar cheaper. Nitto's Promenade bar is a mini-one of these. It is a city bike bar for light riders, NOT a long-termer for all-around use, including hard stuff. WALD makes a similar bar, steel and all, but it's not CrMo, and certainly wouldn't pass EN tests. And there are, no doubt, others. Nitto makes the best handlebars in the world. And, from an importer/wholesaler's point of view, also the most expensive. Bosco bars "enjoy" a minimal margin, because at some point they have to be price-competitive with bars that aren't as good and don't cost as much from the manufacturer. Now sewn to a strip of black felt for reinforcement.
Another 20+ year old original design using Reflexite and Velcro. It weighs about 11g--less than half an ounce, goes on and off in two seconds, and unlike every other spoke/wheel reflector on the market, doesn't affect spoke tension. It's not clunky or junky, and it works great. Plus, you can put it on other parts of the bike, too--should the need arise or whatever. Between the seat stays, for instance. It's a light, inexpensive, useful accessory we have made locally. It contributes incredible insignificantly to our bottom line, and we'd love to just buy a commercial product so we wouldn't have to buy the Reflexite and Velcro separately and then pay somebody to sew them. But there is no commercial thing like this, and so we offer these as a service.

Sold individually.

The classic cycler's triangle from the '70s, and although we've described it as "perfect" before, but now it really is, because we (well, I/Grant) take them out of the plastic and add a 7-or so inch length of elastic to the belt, so good god you can have a 35-inch waist and not max it out anymore. It should go up to 42 or so now. I modified it crudely but effectively, and if you can't deal with that, don't buy it—but I've made it better for wearing over winter clothing.
