Kangaroo Socks
Kangaroo Sox
These 80 percent Merino wool sox are made by Wilderness Wear, in Australia --- and so naturally we named them after the animal that brought that continent the international fame it enjoys so much today!
They cover your ankle in a medium-thick layer of 100 percent wool terry cloth (on the inside), with a mixed wool/nylon blend on the outside, for better wear. There's a grippy band around the instep, as is common these days in sox. They're easy on, easy off --- stretchy, that is --- and they wear like the devil himself.
Eighty percent seems about the maximum amount of wool you can put into sox and not get returns because they wore out at the heel after a few months and dozens of wearings. So that's what these have, and we expect zero returns. (SmartWool and Teko have reduced their wool content gradually over the years, and now they're in the fifties to sixties, at least in the ankle-heighters.)
The 80 percent wool in these, combined with the super low price --- by 2010 sock standards --- make these the bad-boy bargain of the sock world.
Washing and Shrinkage
That's the neat thing about these --- of course wash them in the washer. If you're a little too respectful of wool, save them for a wool load. Otherwise, forget it --- pound them on the washboard, toss them in the whirlpool, do whatever it takes to get them back into circulation. Dry them either in air or in the dryer, no matter, no shrinkage (to speak of). I boiled a pair, then dried hot, and the shrinkage was imperceptible. Don't boil yours OR dry them hot; but if it happens by accident, don't break the household peace because of it.
How do they feel?
Cozy and airy, and they contour to your foot without pressing against it like a lot of sports sox do. They go on and off super easy, even over your heels. When you're going to sleep at night and you didn't bother to take them off because they feel so dad-blasted fantastic, and then your wife or whatever asks you to take your sox off in bed, and you ask her to do it for you with her toes because you're too tired --- in situations like that, if the sock is too hard to get off, she'll give up, but in the process will have scratched you with her big toenail right behind your ankle bone trying to do it. These Kangaroo socks avoid such calamities, because they're just the right degree of snugness and have the perfect amount of stretchiness to make removal-by-toe easy. The Mary Poppins of socks, they are practically perfect in every way.
