French cloth tape
One roll, French Tressostar tape. It's been around a long time, it works fine, it's not as dense as the Japanese cloth tape, but no matter, it's just fine, and don't think you're being unclassy getting it.
Lots of colors, and you can click through the pix and see the effect that clear and amber shellac have on it.
You'll see the amber does drastic good things, especially to the red and yellow. Some colors, like white and grey, it totally changes.
The clear, on the other hand, doesn't do much, but ANY shellac helps it stay clean, adds some durability, and is generally a good exercise.
$5 per roll.
You get the Bullseye brand shellac at any old paint store, or most hardware stores. Here, look at this video.

At least two rolls of Tresso and Viva tape are needed for bars up to 44cm wide; three rolls if your bars are 46cm or wider.
Only two rolls of Newbaum's are needed for even the widest bars since the tape is so long.
