Description

Nitto Humble Seat Post

This is the "cheap style" post without the cheapness or the low price that goes along with the cheapness. It's the kind many bike books and bike people warn you not to get, because they slip, but this one doesn't, because rather than being made in an English or French or Chinese sweatshop in the '40s or '50s or '00s, it's made in Japan right now, brand new, just being born.

Nitto makes the shaft, a 27.2mm x 270mm long beauty that looks like Nitto made it. The clamp, which is the real business end of the post, isn't Nitto, but it is the one Nitto supplies with the post, and it is Japanese --- and clearly more robust than any of the other similarly designed clamps we've all seen.

This style post has a following among certain bike snobs and traditionalists. We don't stock it to cater to either, but only because Mr. Yoshikawa of Nitto sent us a sample a long time ago, and we liked the look and function. So far, no slipping. If you're over 200lbs, it's still probably a bad idea. But under that, have at it!

You can buy fancier posts for less, but this is the cheapest way to buy your way into the heady world of Nitto seat posts, and there's some perverse pleasure in owning something so finely made in such a low-tech form. Only Nitto would bother.

It's a bit of a bear to mount it. You'll probably need to spread the clamp to insert the post in; then squeeze it back into size using a slip-jawed plier. Then put the rail clamps and nuts in place and wriggle and force the rails in place, making sure you've got the clamp part behind the post part (assuming you aren't trying to sit far forward). All in all, it's 15 minutes of wrestling, but it goes, and you have to do it only once.

Tighten with a 13mm wrench, and give it some grunt.

Please note: If you are weak or not up to a minor mechanical challenge, don't get this post. It is quite undemocratic in that way, and it will slay you unmercifully, leaving you feel suckered into getting it, ashamed of your incompetence, and mad at us for being part of the equation. Seriously. It goes, yes. Nitto doesn't monkey with things that don't work, and we won't sell them. But it takes some hand strength, the right tools, and perseverance.

It weighs 10.5oz (298g), is 270mm long, and comes in 27.2mm only.

Nitto's name for it is SP-60.
