Note: the tweed for the bags is actually this red stripe variety, not the tweed that is shown in the pics on the bike.

British made with the finest of everything and the most expensive labor...as are all the Nigel Smythe & Sons bags. Seriously, not just trying to trick you or appeal to your inner snob--bags don't have to be this good, and certainly if you use them, you should be happy when they begin to look grungy.

Wool tweed laminated to cotton.  The tweed bags are the show-stoppers, the traffic stoppers, the passers-by stoppers, because people aren't used to seeing such upper crust bags on mere bicycles. They'll either appeal to you or they won't, but don't think they aren't tough just because they're so buttoned-up. They're plenty tough. What they aren't, is water-shedding. Now, the fabric itself is waterproof, but in a prolonged downpour, water will creep in the seams where the needle punched the fabric, and nothing will get soggy, but stuff may get damp if it rubs against the inner layer of cotton. We sell bag covers for wet conditions, but basically it goes like this: If you like the look and the function suits you, get the bag, you won't regret it.

As far as the design goes, it's really simple. The bags are shaped roughly like a 12-inch loaf of bread. They mount onto our R-14/Nitto Top Rack perfectly because they were designed exactly to do so; but they'll mount on many other rear racks, because the snap-on tabs are fairly flexible in that way.

Bags of this style (sometimes called "trunk" bags) are good alternatives to saddlebags. Saddlebags are the old-fashioned favorite, and we're big fans--but if what you need to carry will fit into one of these, you'll find it carries the load better than a saddlebag does. It's a hair lower and there's no wiggle. Perfect for long day rides, centuries, winter rides when you want to take extra clothing...

If you ride with a rear rack, especially the Nitto Top Rack, and you don't have this bag, well&time to stop the insanity. Nigel designed this bag specifically for that rack, although it works fine on many others. At 12 inches long, it easily holds a family-sized loaf of Big White Puffy bread, but more importantly, it'll hold absolutely everything you need for a long hungry day in the saddle in changing weather. D-rings on the top allow you to keep a rain cape or extra wooly right at hand. It opens with a two-way zipper, and there's a leather mount for a red flasher light. With a Little Loafer in front and a Big Loafer in back, you're all set.
